Two veteran MCA members today piled on pressure for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down, telling the party's seven Chinese MPs to consider whether it is still tenable to support the prime minister.
Tan Foong Luen, a Negri Sembilan MCA leader who heads the party's Seremban division legal bureau, said MCA's lawmakers, including the three ministers, should place the people and the nation above Najib. He told The Malaysian Insider that Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers must consider doing the right thing – removing Najib but keeping the BN in power.
The Chinese-based MCA is a senior member of the BN coalition. The three MCA lawmakers are Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (Bentong), Datuk Ong Ka Chuan (Tanjong Malim) and Datuk Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam), while Datuk Chua Tee Yong (Labis) is a deputy minister. Tan, who is a lawyer and a central delegate member, was responding to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call on BN parliamentarians to support a motion of no-confidence against Najib's leadership.
The country’s longest serving prime minister said a successful no-confidence vote would only result in Najib’s ouster, but BN would remain in power since it has the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
BN will not fall after Najib is removed. BN is still the party with the majority," Dr Mahathir had told reporters while attending the Bersih 4 rally over the weekend and repeated his call in a blog posting yesterday.
Saying Najib's continued leadership had created a lot of controversy in the eyes of the international community, Tan said MCA leaders must take stock whether it was appropriate to allow the prime minister to continue leading the country.Meanwhile, Kluang MCA division chief Gan Ping Sieu (pic, right) said the constitutional process should take its due course for MPs to perform their duty.
